| renae katherine hufford Renae sighed as she walked along the Via Principalis, exhausted from her morning training session. One earbud from her Ipod was installed into her ear as she walked along the road aimlessly. She wanted to calm her legs down after the sprints the Fourth had done in the morning, no matter how much her legs felt like jello. 'Hall of Fame' by the Script was drumming in her ears as she continued on her way, hands in the pocket of her green jacket. Her blonde hair was braided down her back in a messy style, showing that she didn't really care right now. She was tired. Renae wanted to take a nap, but she knew it would just show her leaders that she was too weak for that training routine. No matter how hard things got, the Roman wasn't weak. Humming along to the music, her blue eyes stared out at the passing demigods. Most looked like they were in a hurry, to her dismay. Renae was hoping to see her friend Mckenna walking around, but there was no sign of her. Her combat boots thudded against the smooth surface of the road as she continued to search for someone she knew and could talk too. Then a familiar head of brown hair came into view, and Renae saw her chance. "Will!" she said with a wave of her hand. Slipping the earbud out of her ear, she set it in her jacket. "Hey."outfit layout and graphics (c) sapphire | |

| "Hey!" He called back. "It's still just William." He corrected, smiling at seeing Renae again. He had hoped to run into her but it just hasn't happened, at least not until now. "Where are you coming from?" He asked. He had finally assembled and enchanted the blade he had been working on when they first met, and had just finished delivering it to the barracks. He was actually on his way to lunch at the moment, but didn't have any specific plans. | |

| renae katherine hufford Renae smiled at his reply, no matter the fact that he was correcting her on his name. William or Will, either way, it was nice to see him. "Either or," she said with a shrug, finishing her jog over to him. Even though it had been just last week when she first met him, he felt like a friend. Or something close to that. "I just came from training, you?" she asked twirling the wire of her earphones in her fingers. Her legs still felt like jello, but she didn't care, talking to friends always made her feel better. outfit layout and graphics (c) sapphire | |

| "I just finished delivering the blade you saw me working on last week." He explained. He thought for a moment, appearing to just pause in place, before continuing on. "I was just about to head to lunch. Want to join me?" He asked. He knew of a good pizza place that wasn't expensive. Perfect for a meet up with a friend. He was dressed in a white shirt with a black button down shirt over that, all the buttons undone so it hung on his shoulders. He was also wearing a pair of jeans and white sneakers, but his hands, face and shirt had a bit of black grease on them from the forges. | |

| renae katherine hufford Renae remembered the blade he had been working on, wondering if it was enchanted. She didn't press on the thought though, knowing that whatever it was it was complete. The demigod watched his face calculate out the idea of what he was doing, which was somewhat amusing to her. Her face was blank for a moment, before she realized he was talking to her. "Oh, yeah, sure!" Renae said with a smile. She actually had some money on her this time, which was impressive. Usually she forgot to bring her wallet with her, but today she miraculously remembered. Renae's icy eyes spotted grease on his cheek, and instantly felt the urge to fix it. She pulled her jacket sleeve forward a bit, so it covered her hand. Biting the inside of her cheek, she tried to tell herself that wiping things off the faces of others wasn't exactly polite. Too late. She put on hand on his shoulder, and the other on his face, wiping the grease off. She then backed up, her face red. "Uh, sorry, you had -" Renae just stopped herself. outfit layout and graphics (c) sapphire | |

| "It's fine." He said with his usual grin, interrupting her. "Come with me." He said, nodding his head in the direction of the restaurant. "I'm totally paying by the way." He teased. It only took five minutes or so to get to the restaurant, and when they did, he got them a table by the window. | |

| renae katherine hufford Renae exhaled as she returned back to his side, her cheeks still holding a light pink tint. She glanced her icy eyes towards the restaurant, noticing it was for pizza. Her stomach rumbled at the thought of food, as she shook her head at his suggestion. "Whatever, Will," she muttered, raising an eyebrow at the boy. She was expecting an 'it's just William' in reply again. Renae took a seat, liking the view by the window. It was always better to have window seats, to give you something to look at and avoid being awkward. outfit layout and graphics (c) sapphire | |

| "You know, I'm gonna tell you every time, it's just William." He said, grinning and shaking his head. "What do you want to order?" He asked. He himself was a regular at the place, so he already knew what he wanted, which gave him time to think. He was still trying to figure out what happened to her. In fact, although he would never admit it, he spent quite a lot of time thinking about her. As she reached for a menu, he saw her sleeve roll up slightly and a bit of scar tissue exposed. His breath cut off slightly, almost not noticeably, and he returned his eyes to the menu to think. | |

| renae katherine hufford Renae let a small smirk float over her lips for a small moment. She looked at the menu with interest, she hadn't ever eaten here before. "I'm not sure, what's good here?" the demigod asked with a playful smile still on her face. Her icy eyes followed back to her sleeve, showing one of her old scars. The girl pulled it back down nonchalantly, hoping not to draw attention to the scar. She heard his breath hitch. Oh gods. "What's wrong?" Renae asked, her face hidden behind the menu. That was just one of her many scars, place in a random order around her body. Some were larger than others, some hadn't fully healed, and some were barely noticeable. The demigod normally forgot about them, but she hadn't heard someone react to them like that in a while. outfit layout and graphics (c) sapphire | |

| His mask was back up quicker than a blink, and he replied with a smile "Nothing." His face may have communicated that he didn't see anything, but if you met his eyes you would see that his mind was racing at a million miles an hour. She had been hurt. He didn't know how or when or why but she had. "I'm gonna order a slice or two of Hawaiian, which is my favorite." He said, meeting her eyes. Maybe he would ask her about it one day. Not today though. At least not unless she brought it up. They had met twice, including this time, so what reason could she have for telling him? | |

| renae katherine hufford Renae didn't believe his quick smile. It was too sudden and unnecessary. Her icy blue eyes met his, and she knew he was lying. "You're lying," she whispered, her voice soft. Brushing a strand of hair out of her eyes, she glanced back at the menu. She nodded at his order, still searching for her favorite. She liked all meat pizza, and finally found it. "Okay," Renae muttered, trying to avoid his eyes. She felt a little unnerved, knowing he was trying to think of what hurt her. The demigod tried to avoid thinking of it. outfit layout and graphics (c) sapphire | |

| He was shocked when she accused him of lying. "Nothing is wrong, honestly." It was a true statement. Nothing was wrong with him. He was simply... worried. And curious. But nothing was really wrong. He tapped her hand, indicating for her to look at him. "They say you can always tell when someone is lying by looking into their eyes." He met her eyes, making sure she had a clear sight of his own. "Nothing is wrong." He smiled, before pulling his hand back to his own side of the table. "What did you want to order again?" He asked as he called for a waiter. | |

| renae katherine hufford Renae raised an eyebrow at him, still thinking that he saw something, or thought something. Either way, something was wrong. "Whatever," she muttered dismissively. Her icy eyes met his, and she sighed, exhaling, which caused some of the hair in her face to flicker in front of her eyes. "Something is, I can tell," the demigod said softly, giving him a passive glance. Shutting her menu, she slid it to the middle of the table with a flick of her wrist. The little movement slid her jacket sleeve up enough to show the start of the same scar as before. Renae set her hands in her lap as the waiter neared. "One slice of all-meat please," she told the waiter with a smile. outfit layout and graphics (c) sapphire | |

| "And two slices of Hawaiin for me." William asked the waiter. "Are you ok?" He asked. He noticed the scar again, but didn't draw any attention to it. It was her business, not his. The portion of his mind that had been dedicated to solving her mystery was re-purposed. Instead of seeing gears working in his head when she met his eyes, she would see genuine concern. It often occurred that when he showed concern, people didn't want it. They saw it as pity or something along those lines, but that wasn't what it was. It was simply that William was, and is, the type of person to care about a friend, even one he had only met once before. | |

| renae katherine hufford Renae glanced out the window at the passing people while he ordered, staying silent for a while. His voice awoke her from her small trance. "I'm fine," she replied softly. Nothing was wrong with her. She convinced herself of that many times, and had to continuously. "Why wouldn't I be?" Renae asked, looking over at William. She sighed, running a hand through her hair, crossing her arms. This was the kind of awkward she wanted to avoid. outfit layout and graphics (c) sapphire | |

| William could feel the situation becoming... awkward. Not a good thing. "You just seem kinda... Distant. You've got this look in your eyes like you're a thousand miles away. Normally that means something is, well, wrong. Not with you, but something in your life at least. But, if you say nothing is wrong, then nothing is wrong." He finished talking with a small smile. The waiter walked over with their pizza, and he gladly took it, paying the waiter for both their meals. He thought about it for a second, analyzing his options, and decided that it wasn't important to know exactly what happened to her. It was her past and her business. If one day she told him, then he would gladly be there to listen, but until that day, he wouldn't count on it. | |

| renae katherine hufford Renae glanced down at the table, studying the work of it. She noticed cracks in the wood, like someone had attempted to scratch in their name, or something like that. She listened to William with little interest, feeling like she had just opened a window to her feelings, and it was letting in a draft. "I'm fine," the demigod insisted, crossed her arms as she reclined in her seat. She was about to protest as he paid for her, but kept silent instead. Renae took a small bite out of her pizza, suddenly not hungry. The silence settled over their conversation, which didn't make her feel any better. The only person she had told about her scars was McKenna, who shared some of her knowledge of abusive parenting. However, she wasn't going to just share that with everyone. outfit layout and graphics (c) sapphire | |

| The instant she said she was fine, he couldn't help but smile. One of his favorite movies, The Italian Job, came to mind. "You know what fine means right?" He asked. "Freaked out, insecure, neurotic and emotional." He glanced up at her, making eye contact, hoping to get a smile. "You know, if there ever is anything wrong, you can tell me, ok?" He said "I can keep a secret." He didn't want to push it, but something was obviously wrong. He knew a lot of the time, for someone to open up, they had to have a person open up to them first. Mutual trust. But he didn't have much to open up about. His mom lived in New Rome. He wasn't seriously depressed nor did he have anything truly tragic happen to him in his life. He was lonely, but that was pretty much it. It was probably nothing compared to what she was dealing with. | |
