| It was late afternoon. The sun was just above the horizon, causing the trees to cast long shadows over the hills. William was hammering the last tent peg into the ground, finally completing the task of setting up camp. Hopefully it would hold for the next two nights. He turned around to find Renae crouched over the fire-pit she had just assembled. Now all she needed to do was actually light the fire. "Need any help?" He offered. As a child of Vulcan, lighting fires wasn't exactly difficult. | |

| Renae Hufford Renae had packed in a mad rush, asking her cohort mates what exactly you packed for a camping trip. When asked where she was camping, the girl made a little white lie and said it was with her family. Her backpack was soon stuffed full with matches, clothing, food, and a sleeping bag. The girl emerged from the fourth with a backpack, jeans, a sweatshirt, and a wide grin.
The late afternoon sun set over the trees of Berkeley Hills, their shadows covering their camp. Renae had been assigned the task of making a fire, a task she assumed that would be simple. She had gathered a few sticks, and a large logs. Around the pit she set a circle of stones, so that the fire couldn't spread. At least, that was the girl's hope. Then, there was the the whole 'fire' part. Renae had seen fire being made in moving, where the person would take a stick and rotated it until the spark started. The only problem was the obvious lack of sparks or flames of any kind.
Exhaling, the girl ran a hand through her messy blonde curls, misplacing some of them that had been tied into a ponytail. Smiling as William came over, she nodded, scooting to the other side of the fire pit. "Yeah, I just can't seem to get it going," she muttered with a shake of her head.

| William took the stick in his hands and began rubbing. He started with his hands at the top and shimmied them down the stick as he increased speed. Before long, a bit of smoke started rising from the small pile of twigs and dry grass. "I remember it taking me hours to light fires when I first went camping." He said with a small, slightly embarrassed laugh.
He took a seat as the fire gradually grew, eventually enveloping the logs that would keep it burning until late into the night. "It's beautiful isn't it?" He asked her while staring at the flames. They danced around and flickered, occasionally sending a small ember into the air. William had always found so much satisfaction in watching the flames as they warmed him to the bone.

| Renae Hufford Renae watched William start the fire, taking mental notes of all that he did. "Oh, good, that makes me feel a little better," she muttered with a small laugh. She wasn't discouraged by her lack of fire making skills, she just wanted to learn. Unlike others, this demigod focused more on improvement than the actual skill. However, that didn't make much sense when she criticized people, but whatever.
Looking from the flames and back to Will, she nodded slowly. "I suppose," Renae responded, tilting her head to look at the dancing fire show. "That's also dangerous though," the girl admitted with a grin, standing up to grab food from her backpack.

| William gave a slightly nervous laugh as the fire caught on. Then he sat and stared, getting lost in the dancing, flickering flames. His attention was drawn away when she mentioned the danger present as well. "For me, the danger is part of what makes it beautiful. Fire is like life. You want it to burn bright and warm, and you want to have energy and dance around and have fun. You want some danger from time to time, because otherwise life would be boring." He smiled and looked at her as he explained his point of view. "It also helps that I'm careful with fire." He said with a short laugh.
The sun was noticeably lower in the sky than when they first arrived, but it hadn't crossed the horizon yet. Instead, it was placed right on the edge. The sun's light was warped by the atmosphere, turning the sky brilliant colors of red and orange and purple. William couldn't help but mutter "Wow..." as he watched. "It's amazing how so many things we take for granted can be so mind blowingly beautiful when we take a closer look." He said, his eyes lost in the horizon, the fiery colors reflected onto them.

| Renae Hufford Renae listened to William, a smile forming on her face as he spoke. It was interesting, listening to him talking with so much passion and admiration. One day, she hoped to be able to talk about someone or something as much as that. "That... that makes sense," the demigod muttered slowly, nodding as she too stared at the flames. The more she stared at them, the more she began to understand what he was saying. You couldn't live life going through the motions and expect to enjoy it. Sometimes the risks are worth it.
The girl smiled, looking from the fire to the sky, or what was left of it's blue hue. The blue had retreated into a purple haze, reds, oranges and pinks filling in it's place. It reminded her of a painting, that clouds had brushed across the sky in random patterns, leaving water colored images across it as it went. Renae looked from the sky to William, seeing both the fire and the sunset being reflected in them. "Yeah," she muttered, turning red before looking back out at the horizon.

| After a few moments of gazing into the horizon, William turned to face Renae. With a grin on his face, he asked "What is the most beautiful thing you've ever seen?" One of the things he did to get to know people was play a little game where he and the person in question would take turns asking each other questions. Even if that wasn't what they were doing now, that practice had gotten William into the habit of randomly asking questions, generally based on the situation they were in.
"For me... I'd have to say it would be enchanting. When someone turns normal gold into imperial gold by enchanting it, there's this... I don't even know how to describe it. As the gold is enchanted, an array of colorful, magically sprites are generated. They sink into the gold, finishing the process, but those sprites are mesmerizing." He said, finishing his explanation. William was a passionate kind of person. Everything he cared about, he cared about immensely. With a small, almost embarrassed chuckle, he said "I hope I'm not boring you with all this talk."

| Renae Hufford Renae smiled as he did, raising her eyebrow ever so slightly at his question. Whatever it was about this boy, it was different, and she didn't mind it. He was thoughtful, and that intrigued her to know him better. She brushed a strand of golden curl around her ear, while listening to the most beautiful thing he had ever seen. Honestly, she couldn't think of an answer to the question at first. What made something beautiful? The question was open ended, but she couldn't really think of an answer. The demigod could think of tons of scary things she had seen, things she wanted to forget. But beautiful things? She wasn't so sure.
Imagining the process as William told it, the girl smiled, the firelight reflecting off of her cool blue eyes as he spoke. "You're no boring me, no of course not," she responded softly. Pulling her legs to her chest, the demigod pressed her lips into a line. What was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen? "Well, there was this one time, when I was living with my mom, that I went outside, just as the sun was rising. We lived in the city, so you could see everything light up with the sunrise." She paused, looking down at her feet. "It was peaceful, for once, and it was pretty." Renae didn't know if it made any sense, but it was peaceful for once in that memory, and it was as close to beautiful as she got.

| William couldn't help but smile when she dismissed his fears. As she gave her own answer, he listened intently and slowly nodded his head. "Watching the sun set or rise is always just... amazing." He said, a distant look in his eyes. "What happens in between is an entirely different matter." He said, grinning. The sun had just about set and stars were starting to appear in the sky. From his sitting position he leaned back so that he was laying down. "The stars are just... mind blowing. When you think about it, it puts everything into perspective. We live on one planet out of eight in our solar system, and there are millions and billions of solar systems in our galaxy, and there are trillions upon trillions of galaxies in our universe. All that space, and we're these tiny little specs." William said, not specifically to Renae, more just for the sake of saying it.
"And it's not a bad thing either. It means that no matter how big your problem may be, there's an entire universe ready to help." This time, he turned his head and looked straight at Renae as he spoke. The fire was still burning, and although it wasn't as bright, it still provided them with heat. William thought back on his life. Whenever there had been a problem, he had always had someone there for him to help him through. All he could hope for in life was to be there for others when they needed someone.
